Back in 2000, a typical brochure-style website with 10-20 pages weighed in at just 100–500 kilobytes. Today, the same kind of site ranges from 1.5 MB to over 20+ MB on average—a staggering increase of around 95%.
What’s behind this digital bloat? High-res images, videos, sprawling JavaScript frameworks, and our collective obsession with flashier, more complex websites. Unfortunately, all this digital glitz comes at a cost: massive energy consumption. Data centres must work overtime—and overheat—requiring vast amounts of water and fossil-fueled energy just to keep cool.
At Fairwind Creative, we’re pushing back. Most of the sites we build already sit on the leaner end of today’s size spectrum. But we’ve gone further with our new initiative: the Net-Zero Website.
